BLACKPINK, a new girl group set to debut this month, is drawing much attention from K-pop fans. The group first came to the public's attention when YG Entertainment announced on June 29 that it will launch a new girl group seven years after the debut of 2NE1.

The news of YG Entertainment's new girl group immediately topped real-time searches on Naver, Korea's top portal website, and articles about BLACKPINK became the most-read stories online. The new group was rumored to consist of five members, but this turned out to be one extra. Some 50 trainees of the company were known to have auditioned for the idol group.

"At first, producer Yang Hyun-suk planned to debut nine members in the group but he shrank it down to the final four and concentrated on developing their skills," the agency said. YG Entertainment's hit-song maker Teddy, who wrote songs for company's most successful idol groups BigBang and 2NE1, is in charge of producing the group's new album. The group is undergoing three music video shoots with four renowned choreographers from around the world for its debut at the end of this month.

According to the agency, they put the contrasting colors of pink and black together for the group's name to deliver the message that 'pretty things are not everything,' and 'all is not as it seems.' The average age of the girls is 19 and they have been trained by the company for at least four to six years. Three members in the group have lived abroad, bringing English, Japanese and Thai language skills to the group.

The agency unveiled four members one by one on its official blog starting June 1.

Jennie was the first singer to be introduced. She had appeared in music videos of rapper G-Dragon's solo album "One of a Kind" in 2012 on the track "That XX." Another member Lisa is Thai and she was member of a dancing crew. Apart from her native tongue, she is fluent in Korean, English and Japanese. She's appeared in ads for YG Entertainment's fashion brand NONAGON with singer B.I. and Bobby of hip-hop group iKON. Jisoo is a talented singer who can dance, sing and act. She has also been appearing in music videos for YG Entertainment artists, including Epik High's "Spoiler" and "Happen Ending" in 2014 and Akdong Musician member Suhyun's solo single "I'm Different."Rose is the last charismatic member of the group, who previously participated in G-Dragon's mini-album to be featured in the track "Without You." Rose was born in Australia and she moved to Korea in 2012 to pursue her musical ambitions after qualifying in a local YG audition

YG’s fierce new girl group BLACKPINK show that they are still young at heart as they tearfully celebrate their debut stage with their agency family members.

On August 12, YG Entertainment’s founder Yang Hyun Suk uploaded a video to Instagram (@fromyj) that shows the four ladies coming back to their waiting room after recording their debut stage for SBS’ “Inkigayo.”

In the video, a group of staff members welcome them as they return to the waiting room and member Rose immediately breaks down in tears as everyone shows their relief, happiness, and gratitude at finally standing on stage as a group together.

BLACKPINK has exploded in popularity following their debut on August 8 with the release of their songs “BOOMBAYAH” and “Whistle,” slaying the charts on four realtime music charts domestically as well as taking over the top spots in China as well.

Newly debuted girl group BLACKPINK is slaying the charts with their two new tracks!

BLACKPINK made their debut on August 8 at 8 p.m. KST with the release of their songs “BOOMBAYAH” and “Whistle” off their debut single album “Square One.” 

Within only an hour, the group was already at number one on four realtime music charts.

The two songs were at first and second or first and third place on Genie, Mnet Music, Bugs, and Olleh Music within an hour of release. 

On Naver Music, they took sixth and tenth place by that time, and “Whistle” was in eighth place on monkey3. On Melon, they sat at eleventh and fifteenth.

As of 11:20 p.m. KST, over three hours after their debut, “Whistle” is still holding the top spot on Genie, Mnet Music, Bugs, and Olleh, while “BOOMBAYAH” sits at second on all four charts. “Whistle” is in first place on Naver Music with “BOOMBAYAH” in third, and “Whistle” sits at ninth on monkey3. Who is BLACK PINK?

Blackpink (Hangul: 블랙핑크), stylized as BLACKPINK or BLΛƆK PIИK, is a South Korean girl group formed in 2016 by YG Entertainment. The group consists of four members: Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. They are a multinational group, with members hailing from South Korea, the Netherlands, Australia and Thailand, although their Dutch member Jennie was born in South Korea and lived in New Zealand before coming back to Korea to join YG.

On June 1, 2016 YG Entertainment began to post a teaser image of group debut. Each week a member, starting from the believed to be leader of the group, Jennie, who previously collaborated with artists of the same agency revealed. On June 8, it was revealed to be Lisa, the mysterious girl who surprised many with a YouTube video uploaded on the channel of the agency itself.  On June 15, they revealed the third member Jisoo, the oldest of the group, who modeled for various brands and appeared in several music videos and made a cameo appearance in The Producers in their pre-debut stage. On June 22, Rosé was revealed to be the last member, who collaborated with G-Dragon in 2012 showing her powerful voice with the song "Without You".

Finally, on June 29, YG Entertainment revealed images with the four group members previously revealed, confirming that the group consists of four girls: Jisoo, Jennie, Rose and Lisa.

The agency confirmed that the debut would take place in late July, however, the debut was postponed to August 8.

2016: Debut with their first single album Square One

On July 29, 2016, YG Entertainment revealed an image confirming the debut on August 8 at 8pm. Later it was reported that their stage debut would be on August 14 on Inkigayo

On August 4, a teaser image of Jennie and two new group members with simple clothes walking down the street was revealed. On August 5, a teaser image of Lisa and two new group images were revealed. That same day. YG Entertainment released a promotional image that revealed the debut song title, "BOOMBAYAH". "BOOMBAYAH" was produced by Teddy, and written by Teddy and Bekuh Boom. This single was released on August 8 at 8pm (KST).
